Bert was as many of the players during his time a rugby player before switching to league. He played for Wellington Old Boys-University and Wellington.
Rugby League Career
The switch to league was made before World War 1 and Bert played for Ponsonby. He served in the New Zealand Army from 1914 to 1918 and was wounded. After the war Bert returned to league and played for City, Martime (Grafton-Athletics) and Auckland.
Played in all 4 tests of the 1919 Australia tour of New Zealand and all 3 tests against the touring England team in 1920. Toured Australia in 1921 and 1925, but there were no tests played. Played 2 tests against the touring English team in 1924.
Toured Great Britain in 1926 - 1927, was captain of the side. Bert finished the tour as the top try scorer with 23 tries in 34 games.
Played in the very first inter Island match in 1925 and again in 1926. Bert retired from playing in 1927 and went on to become a Auckland selector from 1928 to 1936 and was the sole New Zealand selector in 1936.
Bert was the 1st Legend to be inducted into the New Zealand Rugby League Legends of League in 1995.
