Coaching Career

Parramatta was where Daniel started coaching in 1999 with the Eels Premier League team and was assistant coach to Brain Smith in 2000.

Daniel became the Warriors coach after Eric Watson purchased the Warriors in 2001.

Daniel has a special place in the history of the Warriors he was the first coach to coach the Warriors into the Finals in 2001 and also the first to coach the Warriors to a Grand Final in 2002, in that same year Daniel was named the Dally M Coach of the Year.

Part way thru the 2004 season Daniel resigned as the coach of the Warriors after a number of poor performances and some high profile player sacking's. Daniel was replaced by his assistant Tony Kemp.

While at St Helens Daniel coached the team to win the Challenge three seasons in a row (2006,2007 and 2008). St Helens also made the final each of those three seasons but only one the 2006 Grand Final. In 2006 Daniel was named the BBC Coach of the Year, this was the first time a rugby league coach had won the award.

In 2009 Daniel returned to coaching in Australia taking over the job at Parramatta Eels, the club where his starting his coaching. The Paramatta Eels made the Grand Final in the 2009 season, losing to the Melbourne Storm.

At the end of the 2010 NRL season Daniel was sacked as the coach of the Paramatta Eels, being replaced by Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney.

In 2003 Daniel was named the coach of the New Zealand Kiwis, the first Australia to coach the New Zealand National team, he took over from Gray Freeman.
