Playing Career

John played for the Cronulla -Sutherland Sharks from 1968 - 1970, Johns position was at standoff .

Coaching Career

John was the very first coach of the Warriors. Part way through the 1997 season he was replaced as coach by Frank Endacott.

John started his coaching career at the Woy Woy Club before going to Parramatta and being the assistant coach to Jack Gibson. When Jack retired in 1984 John was appointment head coach and coached Parramatta to win the 1986 Grand final over the Canterbury Bulldogs.

In 1989 John went to the United Kingdom and took up the head coach job at Wigan. During his time at Wigan they won the League Championship and Challenge Cup double four times in a row. This feat has never been done since or before.

In 1995 John became the first coach ever of the Warriors and was instrumental in bring Dean Bell back as the first Captain. John and Dean had been coach and captain of the Wigan team. He had two and half seasons at the Warriors, being replaced by Frank Endacott part way thru the 1997 Superleague season.

After leaving the Warriors John returned to coach Wigan again in the Superleague. Wigan won the League Championship under John in 1998. John moved to the london Broncos for one season in 2000, but the results weren't great.

From 2005 until after the 2008 Rugby League World Cup John was the coach of the French national team. After the 2008 world Cup John was fired after the bad performance of France.

John has also assisted Wayne Bennett at the Broncos and carried out a review of the Cronulla Sharks in 2006 for the club.
